A Sword Needs a Ride

A balteus was a strap worn over the shoulder to carry a Roman soldier’s sword at his side. Simple enough, until you remember he also had armor, a belt, a dagger, a shield, and plenty of other gear competing for space.

It kept the sword within reach without the soldier having to hold it all day. Crossing the body, the strap carried the scabbard and left both hands free for more important jobs: carrying a shield, handling a spear, or eating lunch.

Like other kit, a balteus could carry decorative metal fittings along with its practical purpose, and its leather needed the occasional repair.

A good Roman soldier looked after his balteus — because nobody wants to turn around and find out he lost his sword three streets back.
