The Army

Put enough Roman soldiers together and you get something much more complicated than a crowd of men with swords.

The Roman army had officers, infantry, cavalry, standard-bearers, guards, messengers, clerks, craftsmen, and plenty of other people with jobs to do. Someone had to decide where everyone went, keep track of supplies, assign guard duty, deliver orders, and make sure thousands of people didn’t wander off in different directions.

Most days weren’t battles. Soldiers marched, trained, patrolled, stood guard, carried messages, worked, waited… and then did whatever the duty roster said came next.
